STUDENT SUPPORT

Māori & Pacific Support

We prioritise opportunities for enabling Māori and Pacific student success in all our courses and offer a range of services and resources

Nau mai! Afio mai!

We are an education organisation that prioritises opportunities for enabling Māori and Pacific student success in all our professional development programmes.
Whether it is submitting your assessments in te reo Māori or having a korero other learners who also identify as Māori and Pacific to support each other through the journey, there are a number of ways that we can support you. Our learning environments are inclusive and enable all learners to bring their authentic selves to their learning - their worldviews, culture, language and experience. Upholding the mana of all learners is very important to us, and we love to learn from you as you learn from us.

Below you’ll find information about our academyEX Māori and Pacific support team, initiatives that you can engage with while studying with us and scholarships and funding that could support you to study. Please get in touch, we’d love to kōrero with you.

Manaaki Fono

Manaaki Fono is our main forum for academic, pastoral and cultural support for Māori and Pacific students. Manaaki meaning to care and support (one of our organisational values); and Fono meaning to meet. Our kaupapa is guided by whakawhanaungatanga and the Talanoa model, which establishes meaningful connection through conversation in order to address deeper, sometimes difficult topics. The purpose of these sessions is to ‘teu le vā’, close the gaps, strengthen the relationships, build connections and provide space for conversation and collaboration.

This takes shape in an online space to connect and support each other with a regular drop-in Zoom session and a ManaakiFono Slack channel where Māori and Pacific students can pop in and kōrero with staff about ‘what’s on top’ for you with your learning.

ManaakiFono is a safe space for you to get support and guidance for your programme like assessments, academic writing, reflection writing, anything at all to help you succeed. We also enable and enhance tuakana-teina relationships as you get to meet and talk with students from other cohorts.

When you sign up to learn with us, your programme team will let you know when your regular ManaakiFono sessions are.

Students are encouraged to submit assessments in te reo Māori, or in both English and Māori, for any of our programmes. When submitting your work through the LMS please indicate in the drop down menu on the right if you are submitting in te reo Māori or English. If you need any support with submitting in te reo Māori please contact Te Mihinga Komene through ManaakiFono, or Slack.
