The Rise of the 'Pracademic': A Moment of Discovery Sparks Pacific Enterprise Revolution

"I almost screamed at the camera going, oh, those are my values!" For Roschelle Marshall, this moment of revelation during her academyEX journey wasn't just about self-discovery – it was the spark that would ignite a movement. Born to a Samoan mother who came to Aotearoa New Zealand at 16 and a Scottish-Irish father, Roschelle had always carried her Pacific values of service and respect, but it took a powerful learning experience to bring them into focus and transform them into action.

Turning Insight into Impact

What do you do when you discover that less than 2% of business owners in Aotearoa are Pacific, despite making up nearly 9% of the population? For Roschelle, this wasn't just a statistic – it was a call to action. By becoming what she calls a "pracademic" – bridging the gap between academic research and real-world change – she set out to positively change the landscape of Pacific entrepreneurship. This innovative approach combines deep cultural understanding with practical business strategies to create lasting change.

Building Pathways to Success

"Sketch your business plan on a page and spend $100 to get started and just start testing and iterating," Roschelle advises, championing an accessible approach to enterprise that she has borrowed from working with two wāhine who support indigenous business. This wisdom comes from understanding that great ideas don't need massive capital – they need nurturing, like-minded communities and practical support to grow. Her approach breaks down the barriers that often prevent Pacific entrepreneurs from taking their first steps into business, making the journey feel achievable rather than overwhelming while also fostering self-confidence.

Creating Tomorrow's Leaders

Roschelle's vision reaches beyond individual success stories: "If you've got this idea, if you've even got a side hustle... how do we wrap around our Pacific people within the community?" Now serving on the Pacific Strategic Reference Group for Ringa Hora Workforce Development Council, Roschelle is supporting systems that support our future Pacific business owners. Her work extends beyond business planning – as both a trained Climate Reality leader and advocate for impact-led business, she's helping shape a future where social and environmental impact go hand in hand. "The Impact Economy is at a tipping point," she affirms.

Be Part of the Change

"[When it comes to your Masters topic] Project out five years and think about whether this is still going to matter to you." Roschelle's journey from cultural awakening to community impact shows how personal discovery can spark systemic change. Her story proves that when we bridge the gap between thinking and doing – when we become pracademics – we can transform not just our own futures, but the futures of entire communities. Through her work, Roschelle Marshall demonstrates that the most powerful changes often start with a single moment of recognition, followed by the courage to turn that insight into action.
