Theory of mind, often defined as the ability to discern minds in ourselves and in others, plays a central role in language acquisition and learning. This session examines recent claims that AI has / is on the verge of having theory of mind. The World Economic Forum (2024) has indicated that one of the top priorities of AI in education is the personalisation of learning and content. To do this effectvely, teachers will have to supplement AI theory of mind with their own theory of mind to support learners effectively.
